As the 2008 ALMS season closed in Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca the talk had already switched to the 2009 season. Mainly in what was going on with Acura and Porsche. Yet a side note to all of this was they earlier announcement that after the Le Mans 24 hours Corvette would switch from the GT1 class to GT2. Leaving they part time Bell Motorsport Aston Martin to race alone if they even comeback. It’s kind of sad in a way.
So i was thinking with the 2010-2011 GT rule book up in they air.[will there be one or two GT classes and what will they be upgraded and simplified GT2's or GT2 becoming GT1 and GT3 becoming GT2] Why not take the bold step and bring SuperGT GT500 cars from Acura, Nissan and Lexus. Well what to do with the real GT1’s for three races or the year? Well for Corvette, let them race out like they planned it wasn’t like Bell was real competition anyway. Really just make them an exhibition race class. No points just let them go out on top. As for Bell there unhappy with the way Aston Martin treated them so hook them up with a good GT2 Porsche or Ferrari and them them get to it I guess
So back to GT500 and call them that please! It’s simple really have Acura, Lexus and Nissan ship over four cars. Three to be handed out to teams and raced and one as a spare. Only use year old chassis and parts to prevent them from having to make large investments in development programs. Ban any new parts and restrict use only those pieces from the 2008 season.
There are real benefits to this idea. For the ALMS that brings in two new manufacturers, creating an exciting new racing class which will take over from GT1 with just two permeant entries and one part time to nine full time cars.that will bring more attention and lots of potential growth for the series. For Nissan this is a win win. They bring over they dominate turn key racing program for there flagship vehicle. For Lexus again it’s a turn key low investment program that puts them on track and up against BMW, Audi and Acura there market rivals. It’s got to have more selling power to the market then the Grand-Am Series. Now for Acura there isn’t as many benefits for them. They already have a race winning program in place with the ALMS. So maybe then they’ve hinted at eventually running a GT program with the NSX once the new model is launched should consider this they walk before you run phase of that.
now they real problem is that this will anger they ACO who allow the ALMS to use the Le Mans moniker. The ALMS has played with the rules before but will be there biggest move away from the ACO they have ever taken! Too bad it’s just my idea the though of a few of those amazing machines on the street of long beach would be amazing oh well then
